April 24, 2020 – Roswell High School Principal Dr. Robert Shaw and Athletic Director Ben Sutter are pleased to announce the hiring of Matt McCarthy as the new Head Softball and Head Baseball Coach.
“We are extremely excited about adding a coach of Matt’s caliber to our athletic staff and I believe that both programs are going to see an immediate impact with him at the helm,” said Sutter.
McCarthy will also teach physical education at Roswell High School beginning this fall.
McCarthy is an Alpharetta native and a graduate of Chattahoochee High school where he was part of the 2005 State Championship baseball team. He went on to play college baseball at Jefferson State Community College in Alabama before finishing up at the University of Georgia with a major in health and physical education. McCarthy also earned a master’s degree in kinesiology from Georgia Southern University.
McCarthy has been teaching and coaching in Fulton County for seven years, three of which were as head softball coach and head baseball coach at Centennial High School. During this time, he has been part of many summer programs, working with athletes from all over Georgia. Besides his coaching roles, McCarthy is currently a physical education teacher at New Prospect Elementary School in Alpharetta.
“As soon as we started interviewing Coach McCarthy, it was obvious that he has a passion for softball and baseball and, more importantly, wants to help all his players become young men and women who have the skills and confident to achieve whatever they want in life,” said Shaw. “We are glad to welcome him to the Hornet family.”
McCarthy is the son of Peggy and Gene McCarthy of Alpharetta. He and his wife Courtney have one daughter, Collins.
“My family and I are looking forward to being a part of Roswell High School and the excellent athletic programs,” said McCarthy. “We are very excited for the opportunity and ready to get started.”
